My Summer 2012
During the summer of 2012, I worked for a program known as The Summer Youth College and Work Readiness Program or Summer Youth Program (SYP) for short. The program was funded out of the Office of Outreach and Engagement here at The Ohio State University. While I was in charge of mentoring 9 amazing rising juniors and seniors from various high schools around Columbus, we had a total of 66 students. Each day different speakers would present and interact with the kids on various aspects of professionalism and work readiness skills. Every Friday, we went on a field trip to fun and educational sites such as the branch campuses of OSU, the Freedom Center in Cincinnati, and even Cedar Point. The program met everyday during the work week and lasted for six weeks. I became so attached to the kids, especially the nine in my own group. I watched them grow and become more polished students and individuals. I felt like a proud parent when they gave their final presentations and graduated from the program. This experience was so amazing that I am even considering teaching as a career if i decide not to go the medical school route. I am definitely looking forward to working with the program again in the future.
